Getting started

Use the infinibook app to set up and manage your reader. Everything starts here: making your own recordings, inviting family and friends to your Household, and browsing and adding new booklets.

This guide walks you through the main app features so you can get the most out of your reader.

Settings tab

Open the Settings tab in the top-right corner of the screen. You’ll find these sections:

  • My profile: View and edit your account details. We recommend staying logged in whenever you use the app, so your recordings are backed up and your reader stays in sync with your account.
  • Household: Manage your Household and its members. A Household lets multiple people, family or friends, share and contribute recordings to your reader.

Books tab

The Books tab has two sections:

  • Library: All the booklets you’ve purchased and added to your library.
  • Recommended: Booklets available for your reader that your child might enjoy.

Tap any booklet, in your Library or in Recommended, to see its main features or record your own narration.

Readers tab

The Readers tab is where you manage the readers connected to the app. Once you connect to a reader, you can:

  • View activity & battery: Check the reader’s status and battery level.
  • Download content & updates: Make sure your reader has the latest content and software.

Add a new booklet

To add a new booklet to your reader:

Step 1

Place the booklet into your reader. An audio message will let you know the booklet isn’t recognized yet.

Step 2

Connect to your reader by opening the Readers tab and placing your phone on the back of your reader.

Step 3

  • Syncing may take a few minutes.
  • For booklets with the latest content, you may be asked to download a software update before syncing. If so, follow the prompt or update the firmware manually.

Update firmware

To download and install a software update:

  1. Connect to your reader.
  2. In the Readers tab, select Download software update.
  3. When prompted, choose Install.
  4. Wait until the update is complete. This may take a few minutes.

After the loading screen, the app will confirm you have the latest firmware version.
When your reader says “update complete,” it’s ready to use.

Your reader is now up to date.

Connect to your reder

Connecting to your reader adds it to your Household. You can then see its activity and battery level and download new content.

To connect:

  1. Turn on Bluetooth on your phone.
  2. Open the Infinibook app and go to the Readers tab.
  3. Place your phone inside the frame on the back cover of your reader. When it’s placed correctly, the Portal will flicker violet-blue to show it’s connecting to the app.

If you’re having trouble connecting:

  • Make sure Bluetooth is on.
  • In your phone’s settings, check that the Infinibook app has permission to use Bluetooth and access your location.
  • If the violet-blue lights don’t appear after you place your phone on the back of your reader, long-press the volume button instead.

Tip: To learn about reader privacy and Household roles, see the Managing households section.

Sync your reader

Sync with the app to add new recordings and booklets to your reader:

  1. Connect to your reader.

Syncing may take a few minutes.
Pro tip: If Switch to WiFi Direct appears at the bottom of the screen, tap it to sync faster.

If you run into trouble, make sure you’re logged into the correct account, then try turning your phone’s Wi-Fi off and back on.

Books disappeared from library

If stories you’ve been using no longer appear in your library:

  • Make sure you’re logged into the correct account.
  • Check that you’re viewing the right Household. If you have more than one, switch Households to find your missing booklets.

Using your reader

Switch between your recording and Cali’s

Each booklet can hold several versions of the story, so you can choose the narration you like best:

  • Cali original audio: Professionally recorded by a voice actor.
  • Your shared recordings: Recordings that you or your loved ones created and shared in the Infinibook app.
  • Custom recording mode: Lets you record directly on your reader.

To switch versions, long-press (3 seconds) the Play all button under the title on the first page.

Play the games

Each book includes games inspired by the story, its characters, and its world, so your child learns while having fun.

How to play:

  1. Open the game page and press START.
  2. Listen carefully to the question.
  3. Use the arrows or numbers to choose an answer.

If the answer is wrong, your child can try again.

Pro tip: To hear a question again, press START.

Bedtime mode

Bedtime Mode is a hands-free, low-stimulation setting to help your child wind down. The reader stays closed and plays a story with soft, calming lights. Controls are simplified to keep distractions to a minimum.

To start Bedtime Mode:

  1. Place a booklet inside and close your reader.
  2. Press firmly on the booklet picture in the Portal to start Bedtime Mode and the story.

The button I’m pressing is not responding

If a button isn’t responding, the most common causes are:

  • Game not started: For game buttons (arrows or numbers), press START first.
  • Booklet not aligned: Make sure the booklet sits within the gold frame inside your reader.
  • Uneven surface: Your reader works best on a hard, flat surface. If the booklet isn’t lying flat, adjust it and try again.
  • Low battery: Check the battery level and charge if needed.

Battery life and charging

Your reader’s battery lasts 10+ hours of continuous reading and play. With daily sessions of an hour or less, a charge can last for weeks.

Checking the battery level

On your reader: Close your reader and watch the Portal on the cover. After the closing animation, it shows the battery level:

  • Green full circle: Fully charged.
  • Yellow partial circle: Partially charged.
  • Red low circle: Battery is low. Time to charge.

In the Infinibook app: Connect to your reader. A battery icon in the Readers tab shows the exact level.

Tip: The battery drains while your reader is connected to the app, so close the app when you’re not using it.

Charging your reader

Charge your reader with a USB-C charger. While it charges, the Portal shows the battery level. When it turns green and shows a full circle, your reader is fully charged.

The book is not recognized

If your reader doesn’t recognize a new book right away, you may need to add it to your library and sync before playing. Follow the steps in Add a new booklet above.

Portal is on, but the reader is closed

If the Portal stays lit while your reader is closed:

  • Flickering violet-blue: Your reader is connected to the Infinibook app. It stays connected even when the app runs in the background. Close the app to disconnect.
  • Pulsing green, yellow, or red: Your reader is charging. The color and the fullness of the circle show the battery level.
  • Full green circle: Your reader is fully charged. You can unplug the cable.

Reset your reader

If you need to reset your reader, use the “kill switch” on the bottom of the device.

How to reset:

  1. Find the kill switch: To the left of the volume button, lift the small lid to find a small hole.
  2. Press it with a reset tool: Gently insert a reset needle or pin into the hole. Your reader will become unresponsive.
  3. Reconnect power: Plug your reader into a USB-C charger to turn it back on.

Note: Your content is safe. Resetting your reader won’t delete your recordings or your library.

Managing households

What is a Household?

A Household is a group of people who can use your reader and share their recordings with it.

Your Household can be as big as you like, so invite family and friends. More members means more voices for your child to hear.

Readers and Households

To keep your recordings private, each reader can belong to only one Household. The first time you connect to a reader, it’s linked to your active Household.

Household reader

When a reader belongs to your Household, you can manage it fully: set its name and your child’s age, and sync content from the app.

To remove a reader from your Household, open it in the Readers tab and tap Remove.

Local reader

If you connect to a reader that belongs to a Household where you aren’t an Admin, it appears as a Local reader. You can still connect and download content to it, but other permissions are limited.

To get full access to the reader, ask its Household Admin to either:

  • Invite you to their Household and make you an Admin, or
  • Remove the reader from their Household in the Readers tab.

Access or switch your Household

To access and edit your Household:

  • Tap the gear icon in the top-right corner to open Settings.
  • Select Households to view and edit your Household details.

To switch Households:

  • While viewing a Household, tap the icon in the top-right corner.
  • Choose from the list of available Households.

Create a Household

To create a Household:

  1. Tap the gear icon in the top-right corner and select Households.
  2. Tap Invite new members to create and send an invitation link.

Join a Household

To join a Household:

  1. Download the Infinibook app and create an account.
  2. Ask a Household Admin to send you an invitation link.

Manage Household members

Household members can have one of two roles:

  • Admin: Manages readers, recordings, and Household members.
  • Contributor: Creates recordings and shares them with Admins.

To manage members, open your Household and:

Add new members

  1. Tap Invite new member.
  2. Enter their name or family role and tap Generate link.
  3. Copy the link or share it directly.
  4. They just need to create an account in the Infinibook app and open the link to join.
